I love Carbon Fibre. I've been around a lot of Carbon fibre, and I've always noticed that they look "wrong" in CGI.
For this exercise I wanted to create a perfect replica of Carbon Fibre. To do so, I purchased Substance Designer and set to learning it. As an additional bonus, I wanted to make sure that these textures worked perfect in other rendering engines.
I knew to get the effect I wanted, I only really needed two texture maps; Anisotropy Rotation and a Normal map.
I spent some time learning the basics, and ended up creating 3 Carbon weave types that I really like.
I started with creating the common 2x2 Carbon Fibre weave. This weave is used for most visual purposes. I then also created a 1x1 Carbon Fibre weave, which can be found on some earlier BMW's and aftermarket car modifications. Finally I also created a 4x4 Carbon Fibre weave which gives it a "Jumbo" look.
